Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses short intense pulses of acoustic low-wave energy applied directly to an affected area through the skin via a gel medium. The goal of shockwave therapy is to trigger the body’s own natural healing response. The soundwaves used in shockwave therapy carry high energy and work to stimulate blood flow to the affected area. The soundwaves also cause a small amount of inflammation localized around the affected area. In the days following treatment, the body works to naturally heal this inflammation and in the process of doing so, stimulate the natural repair and regeneration of cells.

Shockwave therapy is typically administered once a week for 3-6 weeks. Depending on the treatment intensity, shockwave therapy can feel similar to a light tapping on the skin or a very slight discomfort in the treated area. The treatment typically lasts about 5 minutes (although it can last longer) so most people are well able to tolerate any discomfort. The intensity of treatment can be adjusted depending on the specific comfort level of each person.
